Our family had been having a great time on vacation in Kauai and we were all exhausted after a family wedding. My wife woke up at midnight because she heard water dripping from the ceiling down the hall. The occasional drip spread quickly and turned into a steady stream from the ceiling and walls. The huge volume of water made the paint bubble off the drywall.
We quickly turned off the water supply to the whole building in the middle of the night. The water continued for a time and then slowed to a stop.
All of these photos are from the same bathroom as the damage was concentrated in this room. The area affected was much larger but there was no visible damage after the water stopped.
We determined the source was a toilet in the unit above us. The toilet tank float had broken off, causing the tank to overflow.
The toilet tank float stem is made of plastic and fractured.
